RBI & SEBI Cybersecurity Mandates: What Fintech Companies Must Know

If you run a fintech, a broking business or an insurance intermediary, you may answer to more than one regulator. RBI, SEBI and IRDAI each issue their own cybersecurity requirements, with their own reporting formats and timelines. They overlap heavily, but they are not identical.

Preparing entirely separate evidence packs for each review can duplicate work. A team may build one pack for a regulator and another for a customer even where the underlying controls overlap. Keep each regulator’s specific requirements visible while reusing evidence where appropriate.

A better approach is to map your controls once, covering access management, encryption, patching, logging, backups and vendor checks, and note which requirement each control satisfies. When an auditor asks, you reuse the same evidence and present it against their framework.

Third-party risk deserves special attention. Regulators expect you to know how your cloud providers, payment partners and outsourced developers handle security, and to have that written into your contracts.

Which circulars apply depends on your licence category, so confirm this with your compliance team or counsel before building anything around it.
